What each checks
CarrierScrub reads FMCSA's operating-authority, out-of-service and insurance records and returns a dated GO, CAUTION or STOP by fixed, published rules, including a check for new authority registered at a revoked carrier's phone number under a different name, and the missing cargo insurance or bond filings and returned mail that FMCSA's current Motus record flags. It adds FMCSA's safety rating, roadside out-of-service history and crash history from the SMS snapshot, each dated to it. BASIC percentiles do not appear: FMCSA does not publish them for property carriers. See the verdict rules.
Truckstop describes RMIS as automated carrier onboarding: carriers submit documents through an online portal, RMIS verifies them, and it keeps monitoring compliance with alerts when a status or document changes. Its fraud controls, by Truckstop's own list, include blocking suspicious IP addresses at registration, flagging contact details that differ from DOT records, identity badges from a live selfie matched to a government ID, and alerts on calls from VoIP numbers. The RMIS Directory adds carrier searches and certificates of insurance bought directly from the carrier's agent.
Who should switch
Brokerages paying $340 a month or more mainly to confirm a carrier's authority and insurance before a tender. CarrierScrub does that on Pay-as-you-go, with batch upload, verdict-change alerts and verifiable packets included and no demo to sit through. Small Brokerage and Agency add a vetting file: your written carrier-selection policy and every check by carrier or by load, printable and as a CSV. RMIS remains the right tool if you need a managed onboarding workflow: carrier documents collected for you, certificates of insurance, and your business rules enforced at sign-up.
Where RMIS is the better choice
- A full onboarding workflow: carriers submit documents through a portal and RMIS verifies them. CarrierScrub checks FMCSA filings; it does not collect carrier packets.
- Certificates of insurance, including certificates bought directly from the carrier's insurance agent through the RMIS Directory.
- Identity checks at sign-up: suspicious-IP blocking, email verification codes, selfie-to-ID badges and VoIP call alerts. CarrierScrub's Shield compares a caller's phone number with the carrier's FMCSA registration, a narrower check.
