Ten tools freight brokers use to vet carriers, what each one costs, and what each is for. They are not all the same kind of tool: some answer “is this carrier safe to tender to today”, some watch a carrier list for changes, and some run the whole onboarding packet. Pick by the job first and the price second. Each section below says where a tool goes further than CarrierScrub.

What CarrierScrub checks, and what it does not

CarrierScrub reads FMCSA's operating-authority, out-of-service and insurance records and returns a dated GO, CAUTION or STOP by fixed, published rules, including a check for new authority registered at a revoked carrier's phone number under a different name, and the missing cargo insurance or bond filings and returned mail that FMCSA's current Motus record flags. It adds FMCSA's safety rating, roadside out-of-service history and crash history from the SMS snapshot, each dated to it. BASIC percentiles do not appear: FMCSA does not publish them for property carriers. See the verdict rules.

It does not collect certificates of insurance, W-9s or signed agreements, verify identity documents, carry reports filed by other brokers, show BASIC percentiles or safety history older than 24 months, or track loads. Every tool below does at least one of those things. CarrierScrub’s price is per lookup: 25 a month free on Pay-as-you-go, then $1.00 each, or no monthly cap on Small Brokerage at $79 a month.

Questions

What is the cheapest carrier vetting software?

For a check before a tender, CarrierScrub: 3 carrier checks a day need no account, and Pay-as-you-go is $0 a month with 25 lookups free, then $1.00 each. CarrierTrail’s public lookup also allows 3 record lookups a day without an account. The cheapest flat monthly plans are CarrierTrail and Draylo at $49. FMCSA’s own SAFER lookup is free, but it gives the raw record, not a verdict.

Which carrier vetting tool is best for a small brokerage?

It depends on the job. To check authority, insurance and out-of-service orders before each tender, a per-check tool such as CarrierScrub costs nothing until you pass 25 lookups a month. To watch a fixed list of carriers for changes, CarrierTrail ($49 for 500 carriers) or Carrier411 ($99) charge a flat fee. To collect certificates of insurance and W-9s at onboarding, Draylo starts at $49, and RMIS and MyCarrierPortal start at $340 and $515. To verify the person behind a carrier, Highway does that and publishes no price.

When does CarrierScrub's $79 plan cost less than Pay-as-you-go?

Past 104 lookups a month. Pay-as-you-go includes 25 lookups a month free and charges $1.00 for each one after that, so 104 lookups cost $79, the price of Small Brokerage, which has no monthly cap on lookups in the app. See pricing.

Which tools verify the identity of the person behind a carrier?

Highway verifies every user with a government ID, a live photo match and proof they can act for the carrier. MyCarrierPortal lists identity services and fraud prevention on its Standard plan. CarrierScrub does not verify identity documents; it checks FMCSA filings and flags new authority registered at a revoked carrier’s phone number.

Which carrier vetting tools have an API?

CarrierScrub includes API keys and an MCP server for AI assistants on every plan: 25 API lookups a month free, then $1.00 each, or unlimited on Agency at $249 a month. Draylo lists API access on its $749 tier and Carrier Assure on its Enterprise plan, which has no published price. See the API docs.

What happened to SaferWatch?

Truckstop now sells Carrier Hub for carrier monitoring and says Carrier Hub Advanced ($200 a month) is built to do what SaferWatch does and is the upgrade path for SaferWatch users. The last SaferWatch price Truckstop published was in a help article dated 28 July 2023: $199 a month for the first user and $30 for each additional user.

Is this comparison neutral?

No comparison written by one of the vendors is. CarrierScrub wrote it, and says so. What keeps it honest is the method: every price is the vendor’s own published figure with a link and a date, every tool gets a line on where it goes further than CarrierScrub, and corrections go to support@carrierscrub.com.
