How to look up a DOT number by company name

FMCSA issues one USDOT number per company and files everything else -- operating authority, insurance, revocations -- against it. When all you have is a name, this search turns it into that number.

  1. Legal name first, DBA name second. FMCSA stores the legal name on the carrier's registration (often with INC, LLC or punctuation), which is also the name on a rate confirmation or MC docket. If you only have the name on the truck, type that: DBA matches are listed after legal-name matches and marked DBA.
  2. Start with the first two or three words. The search matches from the beginning of the name, so a shorter prefix casts a wider net; add words to narrow it.
  3. Open the record, not just the number. Each result links to the carrier's page with a dated GO / CAUTION / STOP verdict from FMCSA's authority and insurance filings, and to the full lookup.

Results come from carriers in CarrierScrub's dataset, built from FMCSA's operating-authority and insurance open data, with DBA names read live from FMCSA's Company Census. It is a subset of the full registry; a carrier that is absent is not thereby unregistered.

Can I look up a DOT number by company name?

Yes. Type the first few words of the carrier's legal name or its DBA (doing business as) name. CarrierScrub lists every carrier in its dataset whose FMCSA legal name starts with what you typed, then carriers whose DBA name does, each with its USDOT number, city and state and a link to its authority and insurance verdict.

Can I search by DBA name?

Yes. FMCSA records a DBA name alongside the legal name when a carrier files one, and trucks are often lettered with the DBA. After the legal-name matches, CarrierScrub lists carriers whose DBA name starts with what you typed, marked DBA, searched live against FMCSA's current Company Census. If that live search is briefly unavailable, the page says so and shows legal-name matches only.

Why does the search match the start of the name only?

A broker usually has a name from the rate confirmation, the MC docket or the side of the truck, and those start the same way FMCSA records them. Matching from the start of the name keeps results to carriers that actually share it, rather than every company containing a common word like Express or Logistics.

What if the carrier I am looking for is not listed?

Try fewer words, or the name exactly as it appears on the carrier's paperwork, since FMCSA names often include punctuation and suffixes such as INC or LLC. If it is still missing, the carrier may be registered under a different name, or may not be in CarrierScrub's dataset; FMCSA's own SAFER Company Snapshot searches the full federal registry by name.

How do I check someone's DOT number?

Search the company's legal or DBA name here, open the matching carrier, and read its verdict: whether its operating authority is active, whether a revocation is pending, and whether the insurance on file meets the requirement, dated to the FMCSA record. If you already have the number, enter it in the DOT number lookup instead.

Can I search FMCSA's own records by company name?

Yes, free. FMCSA's SAFER Company Snapshot searches by company name, and the public search in Motus, FMCSA's registration system since May 2026, finds a company by USDOT number, legal name or DBA name. CarrierScrub reads Motus records first and FMCSA's legacy file where a carrier has no Motus record, and adds the verdict on top.

Is a USDOT number the same as an MC number?

No. Every FMCSA-regulated company has one USDOT number, which identifies the company. An MC number identifies a grant of for-hire operating authority, and a company can hold more than one. CarrierScrub keys every record on the USDOT number; the MC number lookup maps an MC number to it.

Does a match here mean the carrier is safe to use?

No. This page only identifies the carrier. Open its record to see the dated GO, CAUTION or STOP verdict built from FMCSA operating-authority and insurance filings, and check the phone number the dispatcher is calling from against the carrier's FMCSA registration before tendering a load.
