# CarrierScrub > Free FMCSA carrier vetting for freight brokers. Enter a USDOT or MC number and get a timestamped GO / CAUTION / STOP verdict, built from FMCSA's published operating-authority, insurance, and revocation filings, with plain-language reason codes. Shield, a paid add-on, also checks whether the phone number a dispatcher is calling from matches the carrier's FMCSA registration. CarrierScrub does not broker freight, hold funds, or extend credit -- it is a software subscription that checks a carrier's FMCSA record before a broker tenders a load. Verdict rules are fixed and published, not editable per account. Every carrier reason code states a fact FMCSA published and the date it was published; none allege fraud or draw a conclusion about a named company. Shield (the dispatcher-identity check, $0.50 a check) compares a caller's phone number with the telephone on the carrier's FMCSA registration -- the check FMCSA itself recommends doing in SAFER -- and adds an independent phone-verification service's report on whether the line is valid, active, and associated with the carrier's name. Its reason codes state facts about a phone number; it does not identify the caller and cannot rule out caller-ID spoofing. A check reads the carrier's current FMCSA record; the full dataset is rebuilt weekly from FMCSA's open datasets (no API key required to view the same source data at data.transportation.gov). CarrierScrub does not yet ingest FMCSA safety rating, out-of-service order, crash history, or BASIC percentile data -- those sections of a result are marked pending rather than estimated. ## Tools - [DOT Number Lookup: Free Carrier Verdict](https://carrierscrub.com/dot-number-lookup): Free DOT or MC number lookup.
